December Swing Tips

We hope all of you will have a wonderful holiday season. We have enjoyed all of the feedback that you have sent us this past year and want to extend our best wishes to you and yours. Hopefully you can still work on your golf game a little and groove your swing a few times a week or keep your Symple Putting Stroke perfected. We are always available to answer any questions or help you with your game whether you are already in winter or still having good weather in your part of the world.

News and Notes
We have great news for the holidays. We'll have a new DVD out before the end of the year. We will have the latest installment of the Symple Power Swing Playing Lesson (Version 2 with Student Lesson) out next week. So if you never had the chance to attend one of our full day lessons or come to a clinic then this is a must see for anyone who wants to get an insiders look at how to correct your swing and start striking the ball using Symple Power Swing. Mike M. from south Orlando agreed to a practice tee lesson and then take that swing onto the golf course, in front of the camera's. It is almost 2 hours of comprehensive instruction while having a lots of fun learning how to hit great shots and having fun playing golf. Please look for this pre- release offer next week so you can save extra money and still receive your new DVD in just a few days.

Also, if you have not tried Symple Putting Instructional DVD we have had some remarkable feedback from golfers of every level who have switched to our method. I am currently (for the first time) giving a wonderful gentleman a extended golf lesson. For the past week or so Malcolm W. is in from Virginia and wanted to finally get "this golf game under control and learn a swing that I can play well with".

Well if anyone can do this, it has been such a great pleasure to see a golfer with determination and persistence truly 'get' .Simple Power Swing and learn how to play good golf. While here in Orlando having great weather and playing 18 holes every day! The progress that Malcolm has made is impressive. The 18th hole on Monday is a tight par 4 (you can see it in the Playing Lesson DVD version 2 - as we are playing the same course) with a distance of 360yds, so Malcolm hits a beautiful drive down to the end of the fairway and has about 120 our over water to a peanut shaped green. Well to see the look on his face as he hit his approach right at the pin, land 12 inches in directly in front, first bounce hits the pin and the ball falls down 6 inches from the hole!! Tap in birdie with smiles from ear to ear! We have had such a wonderful time talking golf, hitting range balls, learning how to Symple Putt using a slight set up variation and playing a fun but difficult cou rse. I am personally amazed by the dedication I am witnessing by my new friend. By the way did I mention that Malcolm is 75 years young but can out do most guys half his age (including me).

If anyone can come to Orlando and spend the time, with this extended golf lesson I promise your game will have undergone complete change and guarantee the best golf of your life.

December Swing Tip

TWO SKILLS NECESSARY TO BE A "GREAT GOLFER"

There are two skills necessary to be a of good golfer. I refer to these skills are your "short game" and your "shot game".

Shot Game
The first necessary "Great Golfer" skill is to become a good shot maker. Good shot makers are guys with good swings who hit a lot of nice shots. Being a good shot maker generally means putting in some range time and gaining confidence in your swing.

Short Game
The second skill necessary to be a Great Golfer is to be a "good scorer". These are the guys who wind up paring the hole even though they hit at least two bad shots on the hole. These guys seem to be able to get up and down from anywhere. Believe it or not being a good shot maker and a good scorer are completely different skills.

When I give lessons I can generally get golfers to be good shot makers quite a bit easier than I can teach them to be good scorers. This is because becoming a good scorer takes a lot of "game knowledge" and a good understanding of probability. This generally require a number of years of golf experience. It also requires a positive (but not overconfident) mental attitude.

For example, sometimes after I give a lesson to a student I'll have the opportunity to go out and play a round with them. The first problem they often have is that after the lesson they are hitting the ball longer with each club than they are used to. Sometimes I see a student hit the ball better for the whole round than they ever have in their life yet score about the same as they always do because they were over the green on so many shots. So knowing the exact distance you hit each club is obviously a skill necessary to good scoring. You should develop a chart with the exact distance you hit each club.

I am also amazed at the shots some of these good shot makers take. Sometimes they will happily attempt shots that I would never ever attempt. As I've mentioned before I use to ask my students, 'Where do you want to be after this shot?" Well, even if we were three hundred yards out with a water carry they'd say "On the green!" I'd then ask if they were willing to bet me a buck that they could make that shot. If they said yes they were saying they thought the odds of making that shot were higher than 50-50 which is what I wanted them to think about. If they were NOT willing to bet I would suggest to them that the odds of making that shot weren't too good and they should rethink their shot choice.

Good scorers know the percentage for every shot they take. If they hit in the woods they likely just hit out and only lose one stroke. They don't try to hit a "hero shot" and turn a bogey into a triple.

Probably the best skill of the good scorer is their short game. Every "good scorer" that I see always practices their short game way more than the average golfer does. The good scorers I see often spend at least a couple of hours a week practicing their short game.

The good thing about your short game is that it's easy to practice. You can practice your putting (any maybe your chipping) in your house even during the winter. In season, for reasons I don't fully understand the practice green is almost always the least crowded place on the course. When was the last time you saw a crowded practice green? A great tip is to twice a week take your lunch break and go to any nearby practice green and practice your chipping and putting (and maybe your pitching if that's allowed).

To be a good scorer you can't "waste shots". You have to have solid basic shots you can count on. That takes practice. Watch the practice green at your course. Check out who practices on the practice green. Watch out for the guys who spend a lot of time on the practice green! When you play with a "good scorer", watch them closely. Watch the shots they choose. If you ask them why they chose certain shots, you'll learn a lot.

The off season is a great time to learn to become a good scorer. Make a commitment to practice your short game a least a couple of hours each week. If you do that you'll be amazed at how your scores improve when the season starts.

(Shameless Self Promotion Section) If you want a nice little booklet just like the pro's use to record the distances for each club check out the Yardage-Marker booklet. This booklet also allows you to create your own highly accurate yardage book for any course. I created this booklet about 20 years ago it's been used on all the pro tours around the world, as well as on thousands of courses. It's just like the tour yardage booklet the pro's use each week. Check out the booklet at http://www.yardage-marker.com/
