Getting caught up with my old conventional swing again. Should I be taking the club back or just turning the shoulders from the address position?

| Remember "the triangle"! Turn the upper body only. If the arms, shoulders, and chest all turn together(the triangle),the club will automatically go straight back. Avoid allowing the hands or hands, shoulders or arms, to "disengage", and bring the club "inside". Does that help? |

| Thanks for the reply but if you begin the backwing by turning your core you won't have a takeaway? |

If the club does not move straight back on the swing-path as you turn, for the first foot or so, then your triangle is breaking down. and your swing is "coming inside" too soon. Go back and check your setup, with pre-setting your hands at address and rock n lock. As you turn, allow your right arm to bend, after it passes your right hip. The club-head stays on line with your swing-path, just past that point. Are you with me so far? |

Hi JGirgenti,
You might find this article helpful about doing a one piece takeaway. "Power Triangle" http://simpleswing.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~305.asp
This drill is very helpful staying on-plane during your backswing. I think everyone should do this before every swing on the course just like Mike Weir does. "Shoulder Waggle" http://simpleswing.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~332.asp
BTW, the reason we want you to begin your backswing with your core (shoulders, chest & abdomen) is because if you start your backswing with your arms it's all too easy to just swing with your arms and not really turning your core therefore losing a lot of power.
If you have any other questions just ask.
