Hi all

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oSLrMt3IyU

1st time in over a week hitting a ball, all I was working on was not overswinging and trying to keep a reasonable form.

Looking for some feedback, be brutal if you must. This swing gets me round in the mid/high 80's. Looking to improve.

Was making good contact, shorter clubs were nice, but the longer clubs were a little iffy - and low.

It was raining and my lad was a far back as he could get, so video a little dark.

Hi Jownz,

Hope you don't mind, I just couldn't see the video very well and ripped it. Took the last minute from it, lightened it up a bit and slowed the last swing down to try to get a clearer look with my feeble eyes. Better in full screen mode. Please download it here ( there's a button lower right side) and post it if you want, I'll remove it when you've got it.

I like your swing, it does look like you're at 60-70% or so...but it looks pretty fluid, the contact sounds good and your balance looks good as well. I can see how that swing with solid contact and a decent short game is going to score pretty well. I'll let coach give the lesson, but that looks to me like a pretty good swing to build on. A good, solid poke.

Cheers,
kb

J
first of all happy to help SPS'er from long distance/ thanks to KB for his video assist- Kurt more on you in a moment thanks for allowing me to analyze J's swing.
J - your 'faults' are the most common I see, everyday but can fix if you break swing into 3 parts (recommend own your swing dvd as it deals with exact problem/solution)
1-posture - get slightly closer to ball by being taller and with butt out better posture, think of tiger at address or sergio all have shoulders back, butt out, head up all getting closer to ball to allow for more upright swing plane.
2- take away with shoulder turn - not arms ie hands taking club inside waaaay tooo far.
check your top of back swing position.... is your left arm parallel to target line?? is your triangle still intact?? ok so be correct a more up right looking take away, i know it will feel uncomfortable or weird but as i tell EVERY STUDENT at the beginning of learning or changing, if it feels comfortable it is probably wrong lol if it feels uncomfortable then getting close to correct or perfect.
so from up tall address closer to ball position ( just a couple of inches with all clubs expescially long shafted but all including short irons) this allows you to turn shoulders keep triangle intact / turn chest and keep left arm parallel to target line at top of backswing.
you see if you freeze your top of backswing position how low and inside your arms are.. problem 1, because of this you can also see your spine angle 'dips' or lowers to try to get more out of backswing so now problem #2 is you have to raise spine angle on downswing.
(BTW this is why SPS is so great because we eliminate bad or error causing movement)
.... so you must allow for more upright swing plane (i bet your lower back pain gets worse the more you play, tough position that top of backswing and accelerating for downswing from that low and inside.
now good news - you obviously have good muscle power, good hand eye coordination meaning once you truly start simple power swinging you will hit the ball so much farther and straighter you will be shocked!!!
so to learn top of backswing first get in front of a mirror with a 'target line' on floor ie carpet edge or shaft etc / behind at first to see top of bs looking down left arm to mirror/
look at left arm is it parallel to shaft or target line? feel it look back at ball feel where you are supposed to be then go to where you are normally and feel how low and inside it is.
so top of bs is critical to be on plane with lever power with shoulders and chest uncoiling providing all the power/ plus now spine angle can stay the same as you rotate around spine with no tension allowing this now long arc of swing accelerating thru the hit and on to finish.
3- because your top of bs is soo low then then your finish will be mirror of bs. so finish with hands above left ear not over around left shoulder.... this really shows up with longer clubs and this low around flat swing can only produce low flat shots. ok
now that bs is on plane ie left arm parallel at 9 oclock then follow thru at 3 oclock right arm is the 'measure' so it is now parallel at 3 oclock to target line as you bend or fold elbows to allow hands to finish high.
review
1- better posture up taller with all clubs allowing for closer to ball allowing for more upright take away. not inside with right hand!! turn chest and stay on plane.
2- top of back swing position ( also refer to almost every dvd to see correct)/ ie left arm parallel, keep triangle extended, flat left wrist with thumb hinge.
3- finish nice and high on plane and watch ball go straight high and far!!lol
please let me know if this works or helps and we can always do a skype live video lesson and really get into it.

good luck and please let us know how it goes both good and bad
Mike O

now Mr. KB - man i love your set up, your own personal practice facility.. how much you charge me to come hit a bucket at your place?? beautiful land make me miss colorado especially in the summers.
ok quick look at your swings / looks good but you get in trouble with hands and arms taking club away, you are not hitting the ball each time with good power, i bet.
see your almost 9 oclock position, left arm is parallel ok extension but chest ie shirt button (if you had one lol) is still at ball, not turning to essentially start swing. so no hands take away// feel it done by front shoulder. so 'measure' or check yourself at top of backswing is chest turned 90 degrees, is shirt button pointing at camera??
homework is 1k core turn drills, butt of club in sternum and turn, turn turn now do it with club in hands and turn turn turn // get the feeling of no hands taking club away// esp right hand .. put right hand against club with open hand no grip with fingers wide open right hand with palm against grip, now do take away .. does it feel uncomfortable?? then we have id'd the culprit. so turn for swing, use big muscles in chest and shoulders to do the swing and relax grip tension in both hands. pull with front shoulder on downswing and uncoil from big turn and watch long shots laser off face.

let me know if this helps
take care and thanks for all your participation
my best
Mike O

For you, Coach, the cage is yours as long as you want it. On the house, and that includes the barley pops! Thanks for the timely lesson and I will get on that homework assignment. Thanks to jownz as well for sharing his video and lesson, it's all good.

Best,
kb

A big thank you for your input guys, its really appreciated.

Haven’t had a chance to do any corrective practice yet, but played a stapleford 3 ball yesterday (friendly) - decided to try and swing more upright with taller posture and not coming inside with left arm.

Normally I'm the steady one of the group - not this time (blobbed on 4 holes). Probably not a good idea to try a swing change on the course with less than 50 dry swings practice, but still managed to win lol, the short game was very good and was saving me.

Struggled with the longer clubs all day, the middle clubs were a little better and there were a few very nice shots in there.

You definitely were not kidding about the uncomfortable feeling - scary

Its great having a defined goal to work on and will post to share how the swing progresses.

On a side note I'm putting very aggressively now, the results are excellent and this confidence is spreading to my chipping and short pitching as I now try and make them rather than roll them as close as I can.

Thanks, all the best J
