In addition to Simple Swing and the Simple Putter, can you manufacture a Simple Brain for some of us – one that doesn’t automatically choke when putting? If you come up with one, let me know because I’ll be the first in line to buy it!!!
A little over a week ago I played 18 and had 42 putts. Yesterday I played 9 holes and played very well from tee to green (6/6 FH, 6/9 GIR), but once again the putter collapsed: 22 putts, and I 3-putted on 5/9 holes.
I simply can’t get the putts to drop when it really counts. I think I understand the mechanics of the Simple Putting stroke. I certainly practice, and my practice sessions seem to go well. I absolutely love the feel of the Simple Putter. My problem doesn’t seem to be any one thing (except mental). There were some holes yesterday where my lag putting was awful. For example, during one 3 hole stretch I had a 6’ lag from 22’, a 7’ lag from 18’, and a 10’ lag from 34’. On other holes my estimate of direction + speed was off, so I missed 3 putts from 5’ or less because I hit the ball too hard or too soft for the amount of break that I played.
Do any of you have any tips, routines, etc. that help you putt well in the clutch?
Sooooooo, Joe and Mike, when will that “Simple Brain” be on the market?

what would happen if you did putt and made them?
The mental game is to focus on doing the fundamentals and focus on just doing one stroke.
My golfer I coach shot 30 out, was -7 after 11 holes, choked badly due to him starting to think about shooting 59. +5 in and 70 -2 was ok but he would have won and shot a good score if he had followed his gameplan from the start.
You be making those putts soon.

From 11hcp to tourpro level 2009? Got it how to swing Symple. Same swing with superb puttning. Low 70 scores here I come! |

Hi jclenden,
This tip is from a recent newsletter but I think it will help. Personally I think this is one of the all time best putting tips. I've seen it help a lot of golfers. I really do think this is a "Simple Brain" tip.
YOUR GOAL ON EACH PUTT SHOULD BE TO MAKE A REALLY GOOD STROKE -NOT TO MAKE THE BALL GO IN THE HOLE? The easiest way to make a putt is to not worry about making the ball go in the hole but instead concentrate on making a good stroke. No matter what you think you can't actually control whether the ball goes in the hole or not. THE ONE THING YOU CAN CONTROL IS WHETHER OR NOT YOU MAKE A GOOD STROKE.
Yeah, I know "you think you can control whether the ball goes in" but actually once the ball leaves the putter you can't control it any more. At that point, the grain of the grass, the slope of the green or something falling out of the sky could affect the ball. Hopefully you've chosen the right line and the right speed but the fact is anything can happen. If you normally sweat over a three footer this one tip can make putting enjoyable again.
MENTAL ASPECT Mentally, the goal of "making a good stroke" will make you a much saner and happier golfer. Rather than standing over a three foot putt and worry about "missing it" you now just concentrate on the positive action of making a good stroke. That helps you keep a positive attitude when putting which can result in significantly better physical performance.
Step one to becoming a really good putter is making the ball go where you aim it each time. After you get a little confidence back we'll work on speed and direction to make sure a high percentage of your putts do go in the hole. (When you can make the ball go right where you aim it then your direction an distance will improve rather quickly.) BTW, this tip will help with lag putts as well as the short ones.

Like I said over on the other topic......
This game is 90% mental and the rest is in your head.....
But seriously.....I feel with you jclenden....I've been "there" and still continue to go "there" from time to time.
Joe's advice is the best I've heard so far.
Good luck.....I know you will triumph over that blankety blank ball !!

Well, it's time that this thread be stricken from the records. I'm officially a "decent" putter, or at least my stats say so! I mentioned in another thread that I had adapted to the Simple Putting method and things seemed to be going well. So I just ran my stats on my most recent 72 holes: my putts per GIR were 1.9 (down from 2.4), and my putts per missed GIR were 1.6 (down from 1.9). Those are on target with my personal goal for the year. The average distance of putts I made has climbed from 2.5' to 3.5', which is another way to measure putting success. There's still a mental challenge as I stand over every putt, but I'm making so many more putts now that I don't feel paralyzed. I really believe I can improve on those numbers as my confidence grows. Who would've thunk it just 2 months ago? |

The putting system is most likely the best there is. Even on greens as bad as mine slow and not smooth, I make putts from 10-15feet with ease. I expect those to go in as I can putt with such acuracy.
good your brain is updated "properly"
Giving up trying to meet goals and outcomes this year.
