Tip of the Month Symple Power Swing (SPS) is an easy swing to learn. The only difficulty to overcome for most players is weakening the right hand. What I mean by that is SPS is designed as a core (shoulders, chest & abdomen) powered swing with both the left and right arm forming the 'triangle' of power as your upper body turns/coils in the back swing and and uncoils as you whip the shoulders on the downswing. We call this "Turn and Return". This produces more club head speed because you are using the biggest muscles in the upper body. The accuracy and power produced by this 'triangle of power' is done by both arms being straight thru the hitting zone. This is accomplished by the power arm or left arm being in-line with the club/shaft you are swinging. This makes for a very long 'lever' which transfers the power from your shoulder turn (or whip) on the downswing to the club and ball being struck.
The big thing which breaks this left side dominant swing is your right hand being the dominant force either in the backswing - by taking the club away which breaks your wrists immediately- WRONG - or the right hand pulling your swing inside too far (under the swing plane) which makes for a 'hook' swing - BAD - or at the top of your backswing your right hand cocks your wrists so much that your front wrist bends towards the top of your forearm taking the club off plane. The bad right hand providing dominant power thru the hitting zone can result in a big hook as it now 'rolls' over on top of the left hand closing your club face - TERRIBLE - not allowing you to finish nice and high down the intended target line with a straight shot. Because the Power Thumb grip keeps the club face square to the swing plane on the backswing and the downswing we really don't want that trailing hand (right hand for right handed golfers) overpowering the left arm and twisting the club face c losed (or open). We want that club face to stay square to the swing plane right through impact.
So work on loosening the right hand from start to finish. At address loosely 'Pinch' the right thumb and the top of forefinger. Try a double or triple overlap grip to allow the left shoulder to take the club away. Make your backswing a result of your shoulder turn and coil and not a 'handsey' pull to the inside too flat. Keep your left wrist flat at address and at the TOP of your backswing- same wrist position- no break only a 'Left Thumb Hinge' as we call it.
Make the downswing a result of your shoulders/upper body uncoiling and pulling the club toward the ball instead of right hand PUSHING downwards. Your hands move downwards as a result of your shoulders whipping, not on their own. That is one of our secrets! Try doing some practice swings with a towel. Swinging a towel should help teach you to start the downswing with your core (shoulders, chest & abdomen) not your hands and arms. You'll learn that your shoulders pull your arm down toward the ball.
Finally do not allow the right hand to over power the left and turn over the left thru the hitting zone. Your club face should stay 'square' all the time - backswing and downswing. So try to keep it 'square' through contact, this will truly prevent hooks. If your hands are extended down the target line after contact and your right hand is not on top of your left making your club face totally closed - how can you hook? You can not!
