Joe/Mike,

I was reading where the avg pro reaches the bottom of their swing arc 4" in front of the ball. As handicap increases, that number moves backward behind the ball. I know that you advocate taking a divot, but what are your thoughts about the location of the divot and whether it is something that should guide our attempts to achieve a proper swing arc?

Hi Jeff,

Good question. First thing, the bottom of your swing arc is opposite your front shoulder joint with every club. The front shoulder joint is the center of axis of every swing. However you don't want to hit most club at the exact bottom of the swing arc.

Most all shots in golf should be hit with a descending blow. The exceptions are the driver which should be hit slightly on the upswing and the 3 wood which is struck at the bottom of your arc.

Woods from the 4 wood on up are hit with a slightly descending blow so the ball position is slightly behind the front shoulder joint position. Irons are hit with a progressively descending blow so their ball position is progressively further back from the shoulder joint.

Pro's are much better and hitting into their front legs (besides being a lot more precise) so I would expect them to hit the ball with a descending blow a little better.

So it sounds like your saying that the bottom of the divot for every club that takes a divot should be at the L shoulder? What recommendations do you have for golfers who seem to begin the divot at or slightly behind the ball? Do any of your drills help us reach the bottom of the arc at the proper point? Since our L shoulder moves during the swing, it is not as simple as dropping the club back down to the ground...it seems that the L shoulder needs to return to the proper position shortly before the moment when it reaches the bottom of the arc. What are your thoughts on this, and what recommendations do you have for helping us to achieve this? Should we even think about it?

Hi Jeff,

Well the bottom of the divot could differ from the bottom of the swing arc if the divot isn't long and deep.

Every divot should start at the ball. The ball should be struck first while the club is still descending. If you hit the ground first, dirt will get in between the club and the ball giving erratic results.

Yes that's why we start in the impact position so it's easier to return to the proper impact position.

I think your are "overthinking" this. So no you shouldn't worry about this As long as you are setting up correctly the swing is designed to return you to the correct address/impact position so your shoulder should automatically be in the right position.

The other main variable is the ball position. The 3 wood is played opposite the left should joint and the ball for the other clubs is positioned progressively back from there. (See *url******************************************************simplegolf.com/blog/full-swing/basics-full-swing/ball-position-for-symple-swing-2/********************************************************* for more info.)

Now all that said you should with a good swing be able to hit the ball fine (at least with a little practice) when positioning the ball forward in your stance or back in your stance. Yes the shot characteristic will differ with the forward positions giving you more height (maybe a fade) and back in your stance shots will be lower (and maybe a draw).

Normally you'll want to hit most irons with a descending blow and take a divot. However there are times when you want to just pick it clean (hardpan, cartpart, etc.). On those occasions just play the ball opposite your left shoulder so you can pick it clean right at the bottom of your swing arc.

I hope this answers your questions. If it doesn't please feel free to ask again.
